Based on the powerful ARM® Cortex™-M4 processor, the Atmel® SAM4S series extends the Atmel Cortex-M portfolio to offer:
- Increased performance and power efficiency
- Higher memory densities up to 1MB of Flash and 128KB of SRAM
- And a rich peripheral set for connectivity, system control and analog interfacing.

SAM4S devices are pin-to-pin and software compatible with current SAM3 Cortex-M3-based MCUs, offering a smooth upwards migration path for performance and memory size.

The SAM4S series operates at 120MHz and integrates Atmel's Flash read accelerator and optional cache memory to increase system performance.

The SAM4S series achieves 200µA/MHz in dynamic mode at a low operating frequency; 30mA at 120MHz; and 3µA at 1.8V in back-up mode with the real-time clock (RTC) running.
Offering some of the best power consumption/performance rates on the market for standby mode, the SAM4S16 reaches 120MHz+ operating frequency with a RAM retention mode below 25µA.

The SAM4S series is touch-ready, offering native support for Atmel's market-leading QTouch® technology so you can easily implement buttons, sliders and wheels in your application.

This is good news indeed. I'm happy that Atmel moved to Cortex-M4. The amount of SRAM is quite nice as well, and I'd like to comment on the two DACs, this is something I've been missing for quite a while on many other ARM chips!

But what would be of real interest for me, is an ARM based microcontroller with 0.8mm pitch (instead of 0.5mm) and very fast I/O. I'd like to go up to 70MHz I/O on 16 pins (simultaneously) or highest possible.

I was thinking about moving to LPC1769, but this microcontroller is definitely interesting; it beats the LPC1769 off the shelf.

I'm looking forward to when RS and Farnell gets it.

I forgot to ask a question: Does it have 5V tolerant I/O pins ?

It appears that the speed of the I/O pins are up to 35MHz; this is very good news.

Unfortunately, the device cannot boot from the SD/MMC card, so you would have to create a bootloader in Flash, which loads from the SD/MMC card.

Thanks for your interest in our products. In fact you can get feedback from at91@atmel.com whenver you have any requirement regarding our ARM products.

For your questions: 1. sam4 don't feature 5V-tolerant IO; Generally flash MCU will boot from ROM or internal flash, so we don't support SD card booting for SAM4, but you will we support that on our SAM9 eMPU such as SAM9G20/SAM9G45/SAM9M10/SAM9x5 etc.

BTW, we have SAM4 roadmap which is quite aggressive, contact your local FAE to get more.
