How to remove the cursor?

I have managed to get my system up and running with a GUI application
starting as default. The only problem I have now is that when the application is running on the LCD display on my at91sam9261ek board the cursor is blinking at the bottom of the screen. How can I remove this?
Also when inactive the display is shutdown and after that the cursor is gone if I run my application again.
