I found this short, useful tutorial on creating a packages for OpenEmbedded linux:

How do I create a package that contains and installs a kernel module for linux?
In this thread there is a source code for a module. How do I compile it?

I always build the kernel (and modules) separate, not by using bitbake. Although I do use the compilers, produced by bitbake ;-)

Don't know for sure, but isn't the '-C' variable your using to have make 'chdir' wrong?

Your pointing it at your kernel headers. It's normal behavior, to chdir to the root directory of the kernel tree as far as I know.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with kernels being made bij bitbake...
I like to use the kernels with patch sets from atmel, so I build my kernels separately, as explained on linux4sam.org
