Is there anyone willing to help me with this evaluation kit? I am vaguely familiar with uControllers from the little I learned in school but it's been a while and I only ever used an HC11 and an AVR Butterfly. I have been looking all over the place for an easy to understand instruction on how to connect and program this thing. What hardware do I need and what software do I need to get started? I will be forever greatful.

Thanks,

-n00bcake

hello,
did you check the application note "Getting Started with SAM3U Microcontrollers"?
this application note gives you some hints for starting your first project with GNU compiler.

if you are not familiar with GNU tools i would recommend some commercial tools (IAR of KEIL). you can download so called kickstart versions for free.

for debugging purpose i would recommend any kind of jtag-ice (j-link, ulink,..).

Thanks for your response gerhardf. Where can I find the "Getting Started with SAM3U Microcontrollers" application note?

Which debugger is worth getting? Also, which one? There seem to be multiple versions of the J-Link

if you intend to use the j-link only for atmel arm controllers you can take the sam-ice.
if you intend to use the j-link also with other arm-controllers it's best to buy the "normal" j-link.
if you don't have a sam3u-ek you can also order the IAR KickStart Kit for AT91SAM3U which includes the sam3u-ek and a j-link.

Ok so I've got my SAM3U-EK, my J-Link, and IAR Embedded Workbench. Is there something else I need or should that be everything?

congratulation, now you should have everything you need for developing and debugging the firmware for the sam3u. good luck!

That certainly should be adequate. You might want to add a serial connection so you can instrument your code, or get telemetry data, while the system is running. Connect to a PC running a terminal application like RealTerm, TeraTerm, etc.

The J-Link is good for programming/debugging/single-step type activity, you might want to do testing/development without it connected as it's attachment will likely alter the system behaviour subtly, ie watchdogs, real time interrupts, etc.

Hi

If you have a black J-Link or a SAM-ICE, you can use Keil. www.keil.com
Best is Version 6 or later for either for Serial Wire Viewer operation.

I wrote a hands-on lab for the SAM3S board that should work for your board.

Search for "sam3 lab" on this website.
..or email me at bob.boys@arm.com for a copy.

I'm having a tough time trying to figure this stuff out. I'm trying to use IAR and it says there is a user guide and it gives this address:

ftp://ftp.iar.se/WWWfiles/arm/Guides/EW ... de.ENU.pdf

I can't access that link.

Try Googling it, I hear they spider the interwebs a bit.

http://www.engin.brown.edu/courses/en16 ... de.ENU.pdf

There is also a "downloads" page on IAR's site providing more current documentation, and links there to.

http://www.iar.se/website1/1.0.1.0/78/1/
ftp://ftp.iar.se/WWWfiles/arm/webic/doc ... de.ENU.pdf
