128 bit unique serial number - too many bits!

Is there an explanation anywhere of details on the unique id stored in the various SAM devices?

128 bits is just too many for a unique id for doing look-ups in a database table. 64 bits is even unnecessary but not unreasonable.I would like to ditch half of the 128 bits.

I can only find references that say The uniqueness of the serial number is guaranteed only when using all 128 bits (i.e., all the four words - val1, val2, val3 and val4).

At least Atmel is thinking big, but seriously!

..thanks, Tom
