Hi Jacko,

The 4.3" LCD capacitive touch display TM4300 from PDA can be used with the Xplained board. You can buy it from Digikey, and very soon from Farnell.

The PDA TM4300 add on board is available from Digikey and Farnell ! :)
Following a quick start guide : http://www.pdaatl.com/tm4301_sama5d3xpld_qs.pdf. The ribbon cable ships with the TM4300 add on board.

Please be aware, PDA TM4300 is *not* directly compatiable with the SAMA5D3 Xplained board! Having realized this after purchasing one from Digikey, PDA have advised that users should be purchasing TM4300B / TM4301.

They have a very helpful tech-support team, and I would advise anyone who is in the market for one of these displays to contact PDA directly!

Hi,

Does the linux distribution that comes preloaded on the SAMA5D3 Xplained contain the LCD demo? Or is it necessary to install a different image?

Best regards

Hi,

No, the Linux distribution pre-loaded does not contain rootfs nor Device Tree that can handle LCD.

You can find preview demo with LCD support here:
ftp://ftp.linux4sam.org/pub/demo/linux4sam_4.4/

Thanks, I have it working now.

I just have one problem, when playing with it for just a short time the touch screen consistently stops responding, I have not seen the demo working for more than a minute or two before it freezes. Resetting the processor board, the demo comes up but the touch screen remains dead, I have to cycle the power to get it working again.

Does anyone recognize this, or could it be that I have received a TM4301 with a hardware issue?

Best regards

I tested the demo package with the PM4300B and it worked ok. I guess you either have a defective screen, or it's because of the difference between PM4301 and PM4300B. When you say it freezes, do you mean the touch screen or the whole kit?

I'm having another problem with the SAMA5D3 and PM4300B combination. I'm trying to run android over it, but the touch screen isn't responding to touches. Anybody knows how can I configure the kernel to support PM4300B?
I'm using linux kernel 3.6.9 that I got from git://github.com/Android4SAM/linux-at91.git according to the guide here:
android4sam/bin/view/Android4SAM/Android4A5D3xEK but I assume the configuration should apply to any kernel.

Hi Simon,
did you succed in solving the problem of the freezing touchscreen?

I'm suffering the same problem, both with my on linux distribution (Kernel 3.10.x, Buildroot fs...), and with the binaries downloaded from Linux4Sam web page.

I have investigated the problem with an digital logic analyzer, and I'm sure is the I2C line that hangs!

I'm looking for a solution, it could be a problem of the kernel I2C driver adaption or a problem of the (all) the displays TM4301.

I have made a post yesterday on the forum about this topic, if you are still interested in the argument.

Best Regards

Hi Simon,

i'm having the same problem with the SAMA5D3-Xplained and PM4301 combination.
The demo working for some touches before it freezes. When i restart qtdemo the demo comes up but the touch screen remains dead.

I think it is a general problems of the PM4301.
Pity it prevented my project.

It could be useful to test the board with an up-to-date Kernel and device tree, and see if the problem still exist. I have take a look at the 3.15.x Kernel Branch available on the Linux4Sam GitHub: the device tree blob of the sama5d3_xplained seems to show some modifications on the I2C-1 node (added a clock twi entry). Unfortunately in the /arch/arm/boot/dtb aren't yet available the dtb adapted to the pda displays, so for now I can't yet test the new kernel.

It would be useful to have a dtb configured for the SAMA5D3 Xplained bundled with PDA display, and maybe a _defconfig for the kernel. I've tried to compile the 3.15.x kernel with the _defconfig of the 3.10.x, but the compile result in an error. I have not investigated that error, for now.

Any help in solving the touchscreen (or I2C-1 clock) problem is very appreciated.

Ok, the problem is i2c bus contention between touch screen controller and power regulator ic. Thanks to the person who reply to my post. The answer could be read here:

Hi dolomiti-lynx,

I am new with ARM devices, and this week I will buy from digikey SAMA5D3 xplained kit + LCD TM4301.

I read some post from at91.com, and found LCD touchscreen / I2C problem. I see in your post, you mention that it is necessary to disable the I2C interface of the power regulator chip after the start up of the micro.

After reading the ACT8865 datasheet, I found :
Disable ACT8865QI303 I2C Interface

To disable the I2C interface of ACT8865QI303 and
configure the SDA and SCL pins to input logic pins,
customer can use I2C to write the following
commands in sequence below:
1.Write address 0x0B with 0xE9
2.Write address 0x02 with 0x07
3.Write address 0x03 with 0x01
Disable ACT8865QI305 I2C Interface

To disable the I2C interface of ACT8865QI305 and
configure the SDA and SCL pins to input logic pins,
customer can use I2C to write the following
commands in sequence below:
1.Write address 0x0B with 0xEE
2.Write address 0x02 with 0x07
3.Write address 0x03 with 0x01
4.Write address 0x0B with 0xEF
5.Write address 0x02 with 0x07
6.Write address 0x03 with 0x01
Because I still dont have the SAM5D3 xplained board and LCD module, could you elaborate a bit what you have done? Which version of ACT8865? ACT8865QI303 or ACT8865QI305 ? Thanks a lot

You can have a look at the new AT91Bootstrap code to have an example of the procedure:
